Chinese New Year Edible Decorations

Marzipan Oranges

You will need:
  • 225g (8oz) sugar
  • 180g (6oz) ground almonds
  • 40g (11/2 oz.) powdered sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon of cream of tartar
  • 1 egg white, lightly whisked
  • 5 tbsp. water
  • Orange Food Coloring
  • Toothpick
  • ½ tsp. vanilla extract
Add the sugar and water to a pan and cook on a low heat until all of the sugar has dissolved. Add the cream of tartar, and boil the sugar until the sugar starts to form soft balls on the spoon. Take the mix off the heat and mix it until its starts to turn white. Then add the food coloring, ground almonds and vanilla extract. Add the egg white and put the pan back on a low heat, for a few minutes, while stirring the mix.

Fold the powdered sugar into the mix. Cover the mix with cling wrap until its cool, and then knead until smooth.

Make some small round balls with the marzipan, and flatten them a little on top and bottom. Prick them all over with a toothpick to make the skin look like oranges.

You will need:
  • 5 packs of Lifesavers

Open out the packs of Lifesavers. Eat the green ones! String the rest onto the yarn alternating between the colors. Tie the ends.
